English Department Prizes

The University of Virginia's English Department awards a number of writing prizes each spring. Please complete this screen and the next one to determine your eligibility for the various prizes and read about their rules, deadlines, and restrictions. Only currently enrolled UVA undergraduate students are eligible for the undergraduate prizes. Some undergraduate prizes are restricted by major or year, but some are open to all years and majors. At the graduate level, our prizes are limited to students currently studying in the UVA English Department only.

Students may only submit one entry per competition and all work submitted must be unpublished. You can only submit PDF (.pdf) files. Please save your submission in that format. Please make the submission anonymized: please do not list your name on a title page or in the document headers.

While the English Department always tries to award the prize amounts we list on this site, the university sometimes cannot issue, or can only partially issue, prize funds to student athletes, international students, and other students receiving significant financial support from UVA and beyond. The decisions are not made by our department. Please consult with Student Financial Services if you have questions about your eligibility to receive English Department funds. However, whether you are eligible for a prize payout or not, you can still enter our contests, and we can still celebrate your literary or scholarly achievement. Please submit your work!
